DEUS ESTÁ PUNINDO O JAPÃO PELO ATEÍSMO?

Is God punishing Japan for atheism?

Is God punishing Japan for atheism? As crazy as the question may seem to some,
there are numerous Christians suggesting that God is punishing Japan with
natural disaters because the majority of Japan’s population are atheists.

Glenn Beck hinted at God’s possible punishment on his radio program Monday
morning, and others have been much more clear about embracing this
interpretation of events. Yoido Full Gospel Church senior pastor David Yonggi
Cho released a statement claiming that, “Because the Japanese people shun God in
terms of their faith and follow idol worship, atheism, and materialism, it makes
me wonder if this was not God’s warning to them.”

It is worth while noting that, according to LA Atheism Examiner, David Yonggi
Cho is a celebrity in his own right. He’s the founder and senior pastor of the
Yoido Full Gospel Church (denomination: Assembly of God) and it’s the largest
megachurch in the world with a membership of over one million people (as of
2007).

While many Christians would never dream of claiming God is punishing Japan for
lack of faith, there are nevertheless many that do embrace such claims. Indeed,
some even seem to enjoy the prospect of God punishing the unfaithful. One such
Christian has released a YouTube video praising God for the disaster. Here is
what she writes in the description of her “praise video”:

PRAISE GOD FOR ANSWERED PRAYERS!!! GOD ANSWERED US AFTER JUST 1 DAY OF FASTING
AND PRAYING! HE RATTLED THE ATHEISTS IN JAPAN!! THE REST OF THE WORLD BETTER BE
READY! 1 DAY OF PRAYER = 9.0 EARTHQUAKE IN JAPAN! I CAN’T EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE
WHAT 40 DAYS OF PRAYER WILL DO!

God’s existence is difficult for many rational individuals to accept. The idea
that God would punish the Japanese for honestly held intellectual convictions
defies all rhyme or reason; the fact that some actually welcome and praise such
disastrous events as proof of God’s love, deeply disturbing.
